Mary Svenson

My journey in the decorative painting field began in 1982. Initially my studies in decorative painting were self-taught with the aid of a couple of books and with oil as my medium. Later, I took formal classes in acrylics. In 1983 I joined the Society of Decorative Painters (SDP) and have since earned a CDA (Certified Decorative Artist), and Master Stroke and Master Floral categories of the MDA (Master Decorative Artist). I owned and taught in my home studio, Tole Sampler, located in Westford, MA for 30 years as well as travel taught across the country.

In 2000 I was the design artist for New England Traditions (NET) and I completed my first book, "A New England Tole Sampler". In 2004 I was bestowed the honor of having an original Christmas ornament hanging on the White House Christmas Tree in the Blue Room, and in 2009 my design was chosen for the SDP membership card.

Now that our two sons are all grown up, my husband and I moved to Cotuit, MA in the fall of 2012, where I continue to paint and study my art form. Cape Cod is enriched with an abundant of artisans not to mention the inspiration throughout this area. Peter Hunt and Ralph Calhoon are two of the earlier folk artists that help to carve the path for modern decorative painting. In the spring of 2013, I joined the Collection Gallery in Sandwich where I was graciously welcomed and surrounded by many creative artists. My paintings are mostly in acrylics using a variety of techniques and styles including folk art, primitive, impressionism, strokework, and realism.
